Avalanche Courses Winter 2014/15

I am offering two avalanche courses this winter on the weekends of Dec 12-13th and Jan 2-3rd. The focus is on ski touring decision making in avalanche terrain. Typically the course will involve a day at Evening Ridge near Whitewater and a day at Kootenay Pass. This course also provides an introduction to the popular local touring destinations.

Topics covered include:
pretrip planning, map reading, interpreting avalanche.ca reports, local knowledge, weather observations, terrain and snowpack analysis, slope stability analysis, group & risk management, routefinding skills, rescue scenarios, and some skiing.

Required Equipment:
Ski touring skis with skins, splitsnowboard or snowshoes.
avalanche transceiver, probe, shovel
synthetic base layers and waterproof/breathable outerlayer.
Lunch

Price:
$175 for two days and one evening including theory and practical instruction.

The course is very much directed at personal decision making in avalanche terrain. After providing the information and skills we work on making our own and group decisions. The goal is to get you out ski touring safely this winter.

Custom avalanche courses available for ski touring groups staying at the Ymir Backcountry Ski Lodge
